Why Wrestle?

"Once you have wrestled, everything else in life is easy."

Wrestling Benefits

Wrestling offers both mental and physical benefits to athletes of the sport. Our club and coaches want our wrestlers to excel in the sport but also believe the things we teach them will help them become better humans. Here are a few benefits of wrestling.

Physical Fitness

  • Full-Body Workout: Wrestling promotes strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination.
  • Heart Health: Wrestling is high intensity and helps improve cardiovascular fitness and stamina.
  • Balance and Coordination: Wrestling helps develop body awareness and coordination, which can help athletes excel in other sports and activities.

Discipline

  • Mental Toughness: Wrestling requires discipline, focus, and perseverance, teaching athletes the importance of hard work on the mat and in life.
  • Goal Setting: Wrestlers learn to set goals for themselves and their team, which can help in all areas of life.
  • Responsibility: Wrestlers are responsible for their own performance, which teaches accountability and self-reliance.

Resilience

  • Dealing with Challenges: Wrestling is hard both mentally and physically. The sport can help athletes develop resiliency as they navigate wins and losses.
  • Grit: Wrestlers learn that success comes from persistence and motivation. They will also learn what doesn't work and find solutions that work for them.

Character Building

  • Boost in Self-Esteem: As kids progress and achieve success, they gain confidence in their abilities.
  • Body Positivity: Wrestling helps athletes understand and appreciate their bodies' abilities.
  • Respect: We emphasize respect, humility, and sportsmanship. Wrestlers learn to respect opponents and win or lose with dignity.

Teamwork

  • Individual vs Team: Wrestling is an individual sport that takes place in a team setting. We encourage our athletes to support one another during practice and competitions.
  • Friendships: Wrestling tends to promote long term friendships. The experiences the athletes endure bonds them for life.

Messages From Our Fans

We asked our parents, alumni, and fans what wrestling means to them. Here's what they said!

This past season was my son's first time ever wrestling. My favorite part was the welcoming atmosphere and every single persons' willingness to help him get better every day. Wrestling taught my son about hard work, responsibility, being aggressive in sports, and not to quit when things are hard!

There are very few sports that develop so many different athletic and life skills like wrestling. The field is leveled by weight class and it's you and your opponent. No other teammates to rely on to bail you out. Pressure, hard work, commitment, determination, courage, fear, confidence, winning, and losing contribute to a person's character. Also, the skills learned transfer to many other sports like strength, speed, and balance. Lessons learned from wrestling last a lifetime. It doesn't end when the wrestler leaves the mat.

Wrestling Dad

Wrestling is the purest sport of them all, a force of will between Man. No bailouts from teammates, no bad bounces, no trick plays determine the outcome. 6 minutes to determine the fastest, strongest, smartest, most fundamentally skilled, most conditioned and hardest worker gets his hand raised.

Wrestling isn’t just a sport, it’s a community - a family. When our wrestlers win, other wrestling parents cheer with us. When they struggle, the other parents are there supporting our wrestler and us as we feel the disappointment of loss. Wrestlers and wrestling parents become lifelong friends. As a wrestling mom, and coach’s wife, wrestling isn’t just something our kids did when they were in school, it’s a connection to so much more. I might not go to as many wrestling events as I once did, but there are a few people in my family, who just can’t get enough of the sport. Reedsville wrestlers have turned out some very successful adults. And I know each parent continues to cheer on their successes.

The first thing I think of is family. After a long tournament I look forward to gathering and spending time laughing together. I never wrestled, but in my athletic experiences I’ve witnessed disappointment in bad results, but in wrestling every single parent supports each wrestler on the mat with 100% excitement. Nothing is more exciting than being in the stands during those nail-biting matches, all screaming and witnessing our wrestlers leave it all on the mat. I truly didn’t think I could love a sport I didn’t play, but I look forward to wrestling season every year!

Wrestling is a sport that trains you for life. It requires hard work, determination, and sacrifices. It demands physical strength along with mental toughness. It teaches you that preparation, focus, and confidence will help you reach your goals in this sport and in life. The wrestling coaches, parents, and fans are family, like no other. They support you on your difficult days and celebrate you on your greatest achievements. I’m glad I participate in the sport of wrestling, as it has made me a stronger person.

I do not come from a wrestling background so when we walked in that first tournament with my son when he was 4; I was like, what are we getting into?! Why would anyone want to sit in a packed gym that is loud with kids and parents crying and yelling? Then I realized it. The first time you see your child win, get their first pin, first takedown, or the joy on their face because they are falling in love with this crazy sport makes it all worth it.
